President, PM call for awareness against AIDS

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have called for creating awareness about fatal disease AIDS in the country.

In separate messages on the eve of World AIDS Day -2013, they wished success of all programmes of the day.

In his message, the President said AIDS is a preventable disease. The practice of religious, social and family codes played an important role in law prevalence of AIDS in Bangladesh.

Joint efforts are on in the government and private levels in Bangladesh to check the risks of AIDS, he said and called for upholding the importance of humane, economic and social aspects of AIDS along with health risks.

President_PMPrime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her statement, said the government has been conducting extensive programmes in the country to prevent AIDS/HIV.

“The rate of HIV/AIDS infection in this country is much lower than that of neighboring countries,” she said and added that identification and treatment of the disease has been included in Millennium Development Goal (MDG) programmes.

She urged all concerned, including donors, international organizations, development partners and government-private organizations to take joint efforts to stop social discriminations against AIDS patients, reduce HIV/AIDS infection and AIDS-related deaths.
