Bangladesh offers huge potential for the establishment of a halal food industry besides serving as a platform for Malaysian companies to penetrate Western and European markets.
Malaysian High Commissioner in Bangladesh, Norlin Othman said there was huge demand for halal food products in this country of 160 million people out of which 95 per cent were Muslims.
"We are competeting with India and Thailand in the food industry but we have an edge over them because of our status as an Islamic country," she told reporters during a briefing, Sunday.

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak’s official three-day visit to Bangladesh beginning tomorrow will further enhance relations between the two countries.
A Malaysian Foreign Ministry statement said the visit will seek to broaden and deepen the existing cooperation between Kuala Lumpur and Dhaka as well as to provide an excellent opportunity for leaders of both countries to exchange views and achieve closer understanding on issues of mutual interest.
“The prime minister’s visit to Bangladesh underlines the importance which Malaysia attaches to its relationship with Bangladesh,” the statement said.
Bangladesh offered lands in Sri Lanka for jute cultivation
Bangladesh has received a request from Sri Lanka on jute cultivation in its northwestern province Puttalam where Colombo assured of giving long-term lease of lands.
The request came in a meeting between Sri Lankan President Mohinda Rajapaksa and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina here today, reports BSS.
Sheikh Hasina is now in Colombo to attend Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM).

Myanmar trades the least with Bangladesh
Myanmar exchanged the least border trade with Bangladesh among its four neighboring countries in this fiscal year, according to Myanmar Ministry of Commerce.
The country’s border trade with four neighboring countries such as China, India, Thailand and Bangladesh in FY 2013-14 from April 1 to November 11 received $ 2.7 billion, with the border trade with Bangladesh only receiving around $ 6 million.
The ministry said Myanmar exchanged the most border trade with China, followed by Thailand as the second largest.

Agartala Check Post to be inaugurated on Nov 17
