BWCCI workshop on banana fiber based products

Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BWCCI) organized a workshop on Commercial Expansion of Banana Fiber Based Products on 18 May 2016 at Conference Room of Upazila Agriculture Office, Palashbari, Gaibandha.

The project ‘Socio- economic empowerment of women through promotion of natural fiber-based products from agricultural wastages’ under Bangladesh INSPIRED programme funded by European Union and Ministry of Industries, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh has been being implemented by BWCCI to build capacity of 2000 women entrepreneurs for producing handicrafts from banana Photo of workshopand pineapple fiber, thus to reduce poverty and empower women where BURO Bangladesh is the partner of BWCCI for the project.

Ms. Kohinur Akter Banu, Upazila Chairman of Palashbari presided over the workshop, while Md. Tofazzal Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) was the Chief Guest and Md. Azizul Islam, Upazila Agriculture Officer, was present as Special Guest. Women entrepreneurs, public and private sector officials, NGO representatives, journalists and other relevant stakeholders participated in the workshop.

UNO in his speech focused on product design and diversification, soft loan provision for women entrepreneurs and continuous research on quality of fibers and products. He also emphasized the importance of the role of journalist for popularizing the products. He further recommended to accommodate trained women under other similar projects to utilize their capacity for sustainability. He furthermore expressed his solidarity to provide all supports to women entrepreneurs to continue their efforts.

The Upazila Chairman and Chair of the workshop Ms. Kohinur Akter Banu expressed her solidarity with women entrepreneurs and announce to provide a sewing machine to the training centre to expedite the training programme for women.
