BUET hosts Urban Thinkers Campus

As an associate partner of World Urban Campaign (WUC) of UN-Habitat, Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) is hosting the Urban Thinkers Campus for the third consecutive time at BUET campus. The Department of Architecture of BUET is organizing the 3-day UTC-BUET 2019 from Friday.

The Urban Thinker’s Campus (UTC) is an initiative of UN-Habitat’s World Urban Campaign (WUC) conceived as an open platform for critical exchange of views among urban researchers, professionals, buetdecision-makers and stakeholders, who believe that urbanization is an opportunity and can lead to positive urban transformations. The idea is to build consensus among partners engaged in addressing urbanization challenges and proposing solutions to sustainable urban features, says a press release.

BUET has already participated in previous UTC’s in 2015 and 2017 and now organizing UTC-4 to engage stakeholders in the post-Habitat III era. It aims to bring together all relevant partners to implement the Habitat III outcome document ‘New Urban Agenda’ for building the city we need. This year, the title of UTC-BUET 2019 is ‘Approach to Inter-Scalar Resilience-Settlement Linkages’. The Campus will include Thematic Sessions’ on three specific themes: ‘Housing and Settlement’, ‘Urban Design and Landscape’ and ‘Environment and Energy’. Round Table Discussions will take place on developing inter-scalar approach for building resilient capacities of settlements across rural-urban continuum in order to prepare Bangladesh to achieve UN-SDG 2030 goals and to attain the target to become a developed country by 2041. The Campus will also include Urban Labs with Documentary, Tour and an Exhibition representing academic projects and partner organizations works. Twenty Partner Organizations from government, non-government and international sectors will join the campus including Dhaka North and South City Corporation, Department of Architecture of Ministry of Housing and Public works, UDD, LGED, RAJUK, The World Bank, Habitat for Humanity Bangladesh, IDCOL, HBRI, HBFC, Bangladesh Housing Forum, UIA, IAB. BIP, Prothom Alo, BAPA, Work for Better Bangladesh, Jahangirnagar University and Khulna University.

The outcome of the UTC will be presented in World Urban Forum 10 in Abu Dhabi, February 2020. The outcome will define priorities and outline paths of necessary strategies and agree to the roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders in the implementation of specific action and sketch a roadmap for sustainable urban future.

The Convener of UTC-BUET 2019, Prof Dr Nasreen Hossain, Head Department of Architecture, BUET will convey the opening address at the inaugural session. Dr Md. Enamur Rahman MP, State Minister of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief will attend the inaugural session on Friday as chief guest and Dr Saiful Islam, Vice-Chancellor of BUET will chair the session.

Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Former Principal Coordinator (SDG Affairs), Prime Minister’s Office, will attend the Plenary and Closing Session as chief guest on Saturday. Ar. Jalal Ahmed, President, Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB), Sudipto Mukerjee, Resident Representative, UNDP Bangladesh and Dr AKM Abul Kalam, Former President, Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) will present at the event as special guests.
