7th Nat’l Undergraduate Math Olympiad at JU Nov 27

The 7th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad 2015 for honours level students will be held at Mathematics department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on November 27.

Bangladesh Mathematics Society and Jahangirnagar University organized the Olympiad jointly.

Chairman of the department of mathematics, also the Member Secretary of the Olympiad Organizing Committee ju 22Prof Dr Abdur Rab disclosed this at a press conference held at JU Journalist Association (JUJA) office on Tuesday at about 4.00pm.

A total of 120 students from 12 public and private universities will take part in the contest.

JU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Farzana Islam will inaugurate the Olympiad at the premises of Mathematics department as the chief guest while executives of Bangladesh Mathematics Society will also attend the programme.

Prof Abdur Rab said in a written statement, ‘We have arranged the programme with the motto of creating opportunity for our young talented students throughout the country to shine and show their mathematical and analytical ability.’

He also said that there has a fear about mathematics among our students, but mathematics is very much important for our nation. For this reason, we want to create nationwide awareness about the importance of mathematics through the programme.

The top 10 scorer will be awarded with crests and certificates of excellence, while all participants will be given participatory certificate, he informed.

A question-answer reply session will be held with participants while the country’s reputed mathematicians will reply the question about mathematics. Later a closing and prize giving ceremony will be held.

With the financial support from AF Mujibur Rahmman Foundation, the BMS has been arranging the event since 2009. As a part of the national event, the Olympiad has been being organized every year in the country’s six regions including Khulna, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Dhaka North and Dhaka South.

Conducted by JUJA general secretary Moudud Ahmmed Sujan, the press conference was attended by associate professor of Mathematics Dr Osman Goni, JUJA president Belal Hossain Rahat among others.
